ITALIAN PAINTING IN THE COLLECTION OF THE PUSHKIN MUSEUM - From 20/10/2007 To 03/02/2008
From 20th October 2007 the Palazzo della Ragione in Verona will house an important exhibition that will also inaugurate a cycle of important yearly expositional events thanks to the five-year collaboration agreement signed between the Cariverona Foundation, and the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow. The title of the exhibition itself is an immediate statement of its intentions and its characteristics, and namely: “Italian Painting in the collections of the Pushkin Museum from Fifteen hundred to Nineteen hundred”.
The exhibition will consist of eighty paintings including some extraordinary masterpieces. After an introduction to the Museum, the visitor finds himself in a first section consisting of Rennaissance and Mannerist works comprising a genuine anthology of sixteenth century painting. Giulio Romano and Bronzino, whose Madonna with Child and St. John the Baptist, one of his greatest works of art which was selected to be the representative image for the event, plunge us into the Roman and Florentine cultures of that day in the shadows of Rafael and Michelangelo. The cultural route followed by the exhibition is a thrilling journey illustrating the past five centuries of Italian painting. And it is important not only for the intrinsic quality of the works exhibited in their own right, but also for the fact that many, in fact the majority of these works are being returned to Italy to be admired where they were conceived and executed, leaving Russia for the very first time. The catalogue is edited by Marsilio and features an introductory essay by Irina Antonova, history director of the Pushkin Museum introducing the Museum and its collections. The exhibited works will be well documented with detailed up-to-date explanatory notes written by Vittoria Markova.
